Business Story: published in Brave Magazine, June 2006

Claire Paul is an accredited Clinical Hypnotherapist and Coach whose new business, Harmony4Life, helps people improve their lives. BRAVE magazine hears how a craving to run her own business saw Claire turn her own dreams into reality.

What is it you do exactly?
Harmony4Life uses a powerful combination of coaching and hypnotherapy techniques to release people’s full potential and help them achieve their dreams. These techniques are completely safe and truly effective in improving the quality of people’s personal and professional lives through an exciting journey of self-discovery and empowerment.

Hypnotherapy synchronises the conscious and subconscious mind so they are in line with each other. Coaching takes a holistic view of life and ensures different areas of people’s lives are in line with what they really want and need.

What inspired you to start your own business?
Ever since I can remember I have been intrigued by how the human mind works and how we can use its true power to get what we want out of life. This led to my interest in Psychology and helping people get more out of life.

Through having coaching myself I discovered what would make me truly happy and set out to pursue this. I had always been interested in Hypnotherapy and always wanted to run my own business.

When did you start your business and how has it developed?
Three months ago I resigned from my full time job and started my business. Since then I have set up a good contact database, which has brought a steady stream of clients. Initially this included mainly people who wanted to stop smoking. It now includes helping people in sports performance, relationships, relaxation/stress management, gambling addictions, phobias, bereavement, nail biting, insomnia, motivation, career direction, confidence and self esteem.

What did you do before?
I worked in a large corporation recruiting and developing graduates and discovered how rewarding coaching is, both for myself and from the results people achieve.

What has been your greatest business achievement so far?
Developing an advanced Stop Smoking programme that discovers and understands the triggers for craving and removes them. Research suggests that specialised and extended hypnotherapyprogrammes have success rates of between 88 and 94 per cent. I use a combination of motivational coaching and hypnotherapy for deeper lasting results.

What are your ambitions?
I plan to run my Stop Smoking programme for two or more people.   This will mean people can act as ‘buddies’ providing each other with additional support, which research shows is crucial for quitting successfully.

I also plan to run low cost relaxation sessions for groups to give people a taster of the state of relaxation produced by hypnotherapy.

I am developing a workshop for half marathon and marathon runners which will maximise performance through increasing positive mental attitude, motivation and concentration.

I aim to keep learning and developing my toolkit so that I have even more to offer clients. I am attending an Emotional Intelligence course and will use this to develop teams’ and individuals’ self awareness, personal and team effectiveness.

What lessons have you learnt along the way?
I have already learnt much about running a business but know there is still much more to learn. I have discovered the difficulties of having lots of different ‘hats’…marketer, sales person, accountant and admin person, as well as a hypnotherapist and coach.

However I really enjoy the challenge and would recommend anyone who is thinking about setting up a business to do it!

How has BRAVE helped you?
I attended the ‘Starting up in Business’ course last year and this helped me get my head around many things that I thought would be daunting. I also met with BRAVE Advisers and received invaluable advice about marketing and developing a niche.

Any words of advice for would-be entrepreneurs?
Go on the ‘Starting up in Business’ course even if you are not quite sure what you want to do. Meet as many people as you can and try to get yourself a mentor who has business experience in the area that you are interested in going into.
