Why use hypnotherapy, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
and coaching to stop smoking?
In March 2006, MPs voted to ban smoking in all public places in England from summer 2007. Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are already committed to this. As such NOW has never been a better time to become a non-smoker. There are two elements to substance addictions- physical and psychological. The former is not that strong and dissipates within days, as reflected by the fact that chain smokers can sleep for 8 hours or more without smoking! Yet the psychological need can last for years. Hypnotherapy has proven a successful and easy way of deleting this from the mind. The New Scientist (1993) stated that “(Ordinary) hypnosis (with a 36% success rate) is the most effective way of giving up smoking, based on the largest scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit” (Chockalingam and Schmidt 1992). Clients say they don’t think about smoking for long periods or have the urge to smoke following hypnotherapy.
Some specialised and extended hypnotherapy programmes have success rates of 88-94% (Kline 1970 & Von Dedenroth, 1968). This compares with Acupuncture (3%), Nicotine Gum (11-13%) and Nicotine Patches (13-16%) (Law & Tang, 1995; Chockalingam and Schmidt, 1992).
Over a few sessions, Claire uses a combination of NLP coaching, motivational interviewing and hypnotherapy, for deeper lasting results. This advanced programme is crucial in discovering and understanding the triggers for your cravings and removing them. In a report by O’Driscoll (2002) ‘standard’ hypnotherapy (using only suggestion therapy) was compared to ‘advanced’ hypnotherapy (using a combination of hypnotherapy and NLP techniques). After 6 months 57% of the ‘standard’ group were non-smokers compared to 97% of the ‘advanced’ group.
